The event is by invitation only, so please write to tango@osu.edu if interested. Apparently there is food too. Leads, including women who wish to lead, are in demand. Here is an attempt to explain what I try to do in Tango (by which I mean Argentine Tango) in Columbus.

I would like to have a vibrant community of people dancing Tango in the city where I live (most of the time).

This means people that can actually dance Tango, as they do in any major city around the globe. Not people that come to lessons just for excercise or entertainment, or memorize steps.

By Tango I mean a language for two people to communicate with each other, move together comfortably, understand each other; for the lead to offer energy through the upper body, for the follower to transfer that energy to the legs.

Tango does not mean to replay memorized choreography. It is not for show-off. It is for communicating with each other. Performing Tango steps to Tango music is not yet Tango.

Tango is the only activity I know of where the two must do it really together, totally attentive to each other. Otherwise it will not give the unique feeling that Tango gives. Any other activity that we do, we do alone, possibly in the vicinity of each other.

Tango is not about swingings legs on each other's hips or necks, although steps can be nicely done if you listen to each other. Leading with legs, arms, shoulders, or lead looking down to the follower's legs, swinging legs, shaking, jumping, memorizing choreographed sequence of steps - belong to dances other than Tango. I would try to teach this in the lessons, and weed out bad habits where I think this might be possible; steps are then easy to do.

Tango is (for me) communication, improvisation, not choreography, nor doing steps. Without this communication, Tango would not be as fascinating as it is, it would not give the unparalled satisfaction that Milongueros derive from it.

Here you can see that fish swim counterclockwise, as we do in a Milonga.

These orangutans internalized the essence of el Abrazo: giving love, support, affection, protection.

In this Pulitzer prize winner photo you can see some political Tango, against a corrupt regime. There is an excellent use of the upper body to move the glass wall between the lead and the followers.

Hey Everyone-

We have lots of Tango this week - including the main event this quarter.

Our Moonlight Madness at RPAC this quarter is this FRIDAY, NOV. 2, which coincides with DIA De Los MUERTOS. It is to be held at RPAC's amphitheater (downstairs), to make entrance FREE FOR ALL. At 9pm we shall have a FREE beginners lesson. This is a great time to come and bring friends who have never danced before. Yuval recommends that experienced dancers come and try this lesson in close embrace. At 10:30pm we have OSU Catering bringing THAI Basket (Coconut Shrimp Skewers, Curried Beef Sate, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Thai Cucumber Salad,...), TANDOORI Basket (Tandoori Spiced Chicken Kabobs, Dal Saag, Vegetable Samosas, Curried Shrimp Kabobs, Mango Chutney,...), FRUIT Skewer Basket, and of course drinks, etc. This marks the beginning of our MILONGA, which will continue until at least midnight. Dear all Tangomania,

How are you doing there? Are you enjoying Tango? :D

For anyone who don't know me. I am "Joy", a Thai student who knows Argentine Tango at first time in Columbus and then fall in love with this dance (even though DaYu thought I wouldn't be a Tango lover and a good dancer at his few beginner class I enrolled in last Feb but finally I have proved that I could be one of Tangomania people and improving dancers). You can ask DaYu how I was bad dancer and how much I improved myself during time I was there (end of Feb to late July, 2007).

This is my thought and my story I would like to share all of you. After 2 months that I am back to my home country, now I have joined Tango community and experienced milonga here in BKK, Thailand for sometime. It is good unless it's very hot here :P

There are many good dancers here and they set up one main milonga on every Sunday, practica and lessons on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and also Saturday. :-O

I would like to join all of their activities but because of limited free time I have, I can join them at least once a week only (and extra if I have more time). So if you love Tango, don't hesitate to join even Tango classes, practica, workshop or milonga.

Don't be afraid to dance and ask people to dance with you!. If any of them reject, don't give up, ask another :D. I did like that even though I am a girl. It might be a bit difficult when you go to any milonga at the first time and you don't know anyone (I expereinced that) but if you begin to ask them to dance, you will have chance to practice, learning and ENJOY more and more ( I did and doing that too).

I danced for whole 3 hours at least (in milonga). It was really rare that I would do only sit and wait someone coming to invite me to dance with. You may not need to dance non-stop like I did :P I just would like to tell you from my opinion that if you would like to improve your dancing, don't be afraid to be rejected when you invite other dancers to dance with you.

Being a good dancer can't happen to anyone who does only sitting, waiting and doesn't keep practicing. So don't miss LaBuckeye milonga after class.

Let's make dance floor is a pleasant place that will entertain and fullfil your soul !!

If you don't give up, you can be one of good dancers by time. Now I am still learning, practicing, evaluating myself for better, more beautiful and smoother Tango and enjoying music more and more every time I go to practica and milonga.

Hope this message may inspire anyone who love Tango to keep dancing and practice. One day we may meet in any milonga, somewhere, who knows?

April Milonga FAQ

1) Milonga? When?

We are having a milonga (a tango party) on Saturday April the 28th. The milonga begins at 9pm but feel free to come at 7pm or 8pm for one of our beginner/advanced tango classes before the dance. For details see http://tango.osu.edu and click for more details on any item there.

2) Where?

The milonga will be held in Pomerene 213: Satellite map. There is parking available along the street street parking as well as at the OSU garage Pomerene 213.

3) Do I need to have a partner?

No, we welcome all dancers. In fact, most dancers will come alone.

4) How should I dress?

We are trying to create an "authentic" tango atmosphere. Have fun with this! We suggest semi formal dress though everyone is welcome. Also it might be helpful to have leather soled shoes or alike for dancing.

5) Is there any cost involved?

The milonga is absolutely free including the food catered by OSU dining (while it lasts). You shouldn't need to pay for anything except perhaps parking.

6) I don't dance that well should I still come?

Absolutely. The milonga will give you a chance to practice with many different dancers. If you feel you need to brush up a bit before, feel free to come to one of our classes 7pm, beginners, or 8pm intermediate.

Accomodation for out of towners: free dormitory style accomodation and hot shower will be provided for those bringing their gear (sleeping bag, towel) and RSVP. My attempt will be to create eventually a Nijmegen style event (www.elcorte.com) here, but I'll need all the help you can provide.

He has studied with over 40 great maestros of Buenos Airies. His style is authentic and his teaching encompasses traditional salon for social dancing and elements for stage and performance.

Introductory Lesson (9:00pm - 10:30pm), FREE

Come join us for a free lesson. Material will cover the basics and some great moves for more advanced dancers. Followed by a MILONGA.

SATURDAY, January 20, at Pomerene Hall:

All Levels Lesson (1:30pm - 3:00pm)

This class will focus on tecnique for all levels, both men and ladies. Additonal material will cover various styles of tango and fundamental sequences. Note: for more advanced dancers David will add more advanced material on a personal basis in his
classes. Please feel free to ask him during the seminars.

Intermediate Tango (3:15pm - 4:45pm)

Starting from basic sequences this class will add some back scadas and ganchos and and build to more advanced elements. More advanced people will be given additional material on a personal basis in the classes.

SUNDAY, January 21 at Pomerene Hall:

All Levels Lesson Tango Waltz (12:00 - 1:30pm)

This class will cover the rhythm of dancing to Tango Waltz and use figures that go great with the music. The Calecita, Planeos and Boleos.

Intermediate Tango for Show (1:45pm - 3:15pm)

This class will use elements that can be used for both social dancing and for the stage including Enganches, Drags, and some great Finales (how to end a tango - endings).

Pomerene Hall
big gym, top floor. Entrance from W 12th Ave, south side of the building.
This is a hard wood floor beautiful room, suitable for a Milonga of 500 dancers -- lets hope Columbus will see such a number one day.

7pm BEGINNERS, 8:15pm INTERMEDIATE, 9:30pm La MILONGA Buckeye.

All Sundays and the following Saturdays will take place at ROYER.

SUNDAY JANUARY 7, 6pm, Beginners.

Prices for ALL Saturday/Sunday lessons:
Undergrads: Free pass: $20 per quarter; or: $10 per 4 consecutive lessons, or: $3 per lesson.
Grads: $25, $15, $4; Others: $40, $20, $6.
"Free pass" gives also reduced prices to our Workshops and Milongas.

Just a quick note: during the break, Saturday lessons are suspended, will resume January 6, 2007. Sunday lesson will be held one more time on December 17, with Lucia, and then will resume January 7, 2007. Tuesdays practica will continue Dec. 12 and 19, 7pm, with Lucia and Marcelo.

In addition to the lessons, as usual, see below, this SATURDAY we celebrate in the Milonga (or in our cars, attempting to find a legal parking spot) the victory of the OSU football team, and in partic. the end of the football season: no more traffic jams Saturday nights! Snacks, and a Tango video. In the future, the night of The Game, we shall move the Milonga out of OSU territory

On SUNDAY, we have a special total beginners class starting 5pm with (I am told) 10 girls more than boys. We shall need all of our regular leads that would like to practice more, and thus help, including our women that would like to learn to lead.

ALSO, SUNDAY at 6pm we shall have a PHOTOGRAPHERS' visit; please come punctually at 6pm to the regular lesson!

The lessons are to learn not only the steps, but also the posture of Tango, the contact, the axis, the embrace. The Milonga is to practice what you learnt. Taking a Tango lesson without practicing is like taking a language lesson without practicing. In fact, Tango is a language. The Milonga is open to EVERYONE.

PARKING: SUNDAY: parking is free and legal on W. Lane Ave. SATURDAY: the meters on N. High st. north of W. Lane
are free after 6pm. Please do not park on Curl Drive as OSU fights parking on its property as if it were a top crime.

Last Friday, Nov. 3, we finally had a Milonga in Columbus with more than a 100 people, with heavier concentration at Ana and Diego's lesson. This is a first step in my attempt to form a critical mass for Tango in Columbus. I am very grateful to the performers: students of Virginia Malton, Jim and Joanne Pogros, Svetlana and Robert, and Ana Padron and Diego Blanco, to all those that assisted in Ana and Diego's lesson - in particular Pam Britton and Lucia Bortoli, to Jennifer, Marcelo and others in publicity, and to all of those who came to dance, learn to dance, or just watch, from Cincinnati, Cleveland, and mainly Columbus. Special thanks go to those who attended the Saturday inspiring lessons - I always enjoy new perspectives reconfirming what I believe in. Nov. 3-4, Friday night and all day Saturday, a unique opportunity to watch some of the best performers in Tango, see different Tango styles, learn from the Masters of rather different approaches, and dance! Dancers of Columbus and neighboring communities are all welcome. Please REGISTER to the four Saturday Nov. 4 lessons ASAP; we would like to know in advance the number of students so that the teachers can better plan the lessons (pay in class, email: tango@osu.edu).

FRIDAY NOV. 3 and SATURDAY NOV. 4, TangoOSU, the Argentine Tango Student Organization at the Ohio State University, is holding a 28+ hour TANGOMANIA, with Tango teachers and performers DIEGO BLANCO Y ANA PADRON of NY, JOANNE and TIM POGROS of Cleveland, VIRGINIA MALTON of Cincinnati, and local teachers from Columbus.

We hold two MILONGAS Friday Nov. 3 and Saturday Nov. 4, of rather different nature. FRIDAY NOV. 3 is an "OpenAir" style MILONGA inside the brand new OSU gym RPAC; SATURDAY NOV. 4 will be at a closed, smaller room: MEMORIAL. Friday night: an iPod prize donated by Apple.

Saturday Nov. 4 WORKSHOPS: 10am and 11:30pm by Diego BLANCO Y Ana PADRON of Big Apple, and 3pm, 4:30pm by Tim/Joanne POGROS of Cleveland, will be $10 per lesson, $15 for two, $30 for all four (students), $15, $20, $40 for adults (prepay prices). ANA PADRON and DIEGO BLANCO bring an electrifying and passionate perspective to Tango. They were featured performers in "Tango Fever", "Sensual Tango Review", and "Tango Undressed". They placed 2nd in the US Tango Congress, took 3rd place in the World Tango Competition, and were awarded 1st place in the national competition ARTS hosted by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Ana and Diego recently moved from Florida to NYC where they teach (http://www.tango4all.com) in Manhattan and Long Island. They are the soloist in the off-Broadway musical Gardel.

The classes will focus on musicality, comfort of the embrace, and body mechanics via a sophisticated step. THIS SATURDAY, 9:30pm, Steve from Philadelphia will teach cadenas, cascadas, or maybe colgadas, depending on the level of the attending students. Lesson is free to TangoOSU students and regulars of our Milongas, and only $10 to others (if in doubt, email me).

Our reduced scale summer program continues with Nuevo Tango lessons of ROBERT, at HAYES HALL lobby, TUESDAYS 7pm and FRIDAYS 9pm. Call Robert at 329-6108 to register. Use the dead season in Columbus to get more personal attention.

I posted some photos from my visit to Berlin last week: click on "Photos", left column of our website http://tango.osu.edu Strange people these Berliners: for them the summer is the high season. Actually all the time they have a high season, with about four Milongas a night. It is a city of 3 millions, about 4 times the size of our great capital city. and my recommendation, from personal experience: Tuesday: Claerchen Ballhaus; Wednesday: Roter Salon; Thursday: Osthafen; Friday: Neue Nationalgalerie (openair) & the small hours: Walzerlinksgestrickt; Saturday: Ballhaus Rixdorf; Sunday: Tangoloft, then Loewenpalais, then Max und Moritz.

1) ATTN: Royer closes for renovation--NO CLASS
Royer Student Activities Center will be under construction so that it can be used as a study room. Therefore it will be closed for the rest of the summer. The room is scheduled to be closed from this Wednesday on. Francesco's last class with TangoOSU would have taken place on Wednesday, but due to this condition, it is cancelled. THERE WILL BE NO CLASS THIS WEDNESDAY AT ROYER and the rest of the summer.

I intended to make a short list of Milongueros, but this might be interpreted as being exclusive - which we are not: we are friendly, relaxed and informal! But let me remind us all that La MILONGA BUCKEYE will take place tonight, 9:15pm, at the lobby of HAYES HALL. This nice looking space, at the home of the Dept. of Art and Art History, is near the Wexner center. A photo (taken last night, after Robert's lesson) and a map can be found at the homepage: http://tango.osu.edu (which has now images of our instructors); $1. There are armchairs for those who wish to rest between dances, soft drinks and a little innovation (if I get my equipment to work). All are welcome!

At 8pm Lucia&I hold a Beginners lesson, basic steps for a Milonga, to learn basic moves of social dancing and actually be able to dance, Salon style, (UG: $3)$4/$5.

MATRIX TANGO with ROBERTO

I am Robert and it is time to accelerate into new possibilities.
It is time to dance, it is time to Matrix Tango. The MATRIX TANGO method is my own creation, developed by me. You will not find it anywhere else. It is a development of the Discovery method of Mauricio Castro. It will lead you to learn everything you need to know to be able to dance with anybody, anywhere, at any time. And at the most efficient way.

MATRIX TANGO is based on three parts:
-Awareness
-Structure
-Musicality

AWARENESS

Basic awareness is based on primal instincts.

For example, survival in our surroundings, balance and unbalance, using our spine as our center axis, and using it to respond to our primal instincts. For example, if whom I am dancing with is moving toward me, either to the left or right of my spine, I allow my upper body to fall backwards, in order to provide space for my partner. If I don't do this, I will either fall down or cause excessive strain on my back. Also, part of awareness is to be sure that I have full articulation of my joints at any given time. At the same time, I am using the full range of movement that my body will allow, and developing my hypersensitivity.

STRUCTURE

Structure is the heart of the Matrix method.

It provides every possibility that is plausible. Tango is based on three forms: front cross, open step, and back cross; two systems: cross foot, and parallel foot; and two directions: parallel, and contrary. Once all possibilities are known, I add seven elements: parada, barrida, sacada, gancho, trapada, volcada and colgada.

MUSICALITY

Musicality is based on timing and rhythm.

First I look at the timing, meaning what happens and when. Then rhythm is what happens and when, to the music. We have three options: with it, against it, and without it. Then we combine these two elements to create themes in the music, with the same three options.

Now why would anyone want to learn with the Matrix Tango method?

The Matrix Tango method uses the highest level of communication: Alphabetizing.

Why should you care? "I am happy learning patterns from my teacher." But this sounds very complicated! You should care because Tango can be danced two ways: choreographed, or improvised. The choreographed version uses the awareness to be more intuned to your primal instincts of movement. The structure will allow more possibilities, and to change anything. The musicality is used to build themes that are your creations. The improvised version uses the awareness to focus on balance and weight change in order to lead every step using primal instincts. The structure is the same as the choreographed version and so are the benefits of musicality. Learning patterns is the easiest way to learn. But, you must beg you teacher for another pattern. Your teacher now becomes your feudal master, which makes you a slave to what he or she wants and not what you want. Also, learning becomes very, very slow. Almost everyone I teach says it sounds complicated to learn steps. When the students do the Matrix method, in two to three weeks they are well past anyone else; they are further in skill, sensitivity, and knowledge, than any dancer anywhere.

I am Robert and now is the time to accelerate into new possibilities: it is time to dance; it is time for Matrix Tango.

I don't know if everyone has read the last weekly message (and I'm far less sure if anybody is reading this at all...), but I introduced a book called Tango: the Art History of Love in it. Since I brought it up, I guess I should blog it a little. Here is an excerpt from Chapter 1, entitled, "Tango in Hollywood" (If you would like to read more, this site has the excerpt.):

The history of tango tangles with Hollywood. Tango on film is a chronicle of its own, lurid and strange, mixing dreams and deceptions. Often a tango augments a star—Rudolph Valentino, Marlon Brando, Madonna, Al Pacino—not for its sake but for theirs. And the accord with the tango is always with stereotype: sadness, sex, violence, and doom.

The trend toward the real article includes the conversion of a major star of film, Robert Duvall, who makes pilgrimages to Buenos Aires and frequents traditional dance halls. He takes lessons from masters like the late Lampazo, Danel and Maria Bastone of New York, and Juan Carlos Copes, the latter described by Duvall as a “Rolls-Royce without a speedometer.”

A Buenos Aires television special cuts to a dance floor where Duvall sits enthralled with his girlfriend, studying the moves. Early in 2000 Duvall danced tango for President Bill Clinton and the president of Argentina in the White House—at the express request of the Argentine ambassador.On March 28, 2003, Duvall released his own tango film, Assassination Tango. It had cameo appearances by major tango dancers like María Nieves, Milena Plebs, Los Hermanos Macana, Pablo Verón, and Gerardo Portalea. We’ve come a long way from Valentino.

Thompson recalls older films, such as "Blood and Sand" (1922), in which Valentino plays, "Gilda"(1946), "Some Like It Hot" (1959) and "Last Tango in Paris" (1972), and basically makes a point that these Hollywood movies didn't portray what tango is about, to say the least. Another film that has a tango scene which Thompson seems to favour is "Soldier of Orange," (1977) a Dutch film about WWII. I don't know if Thompson discusses other films later in the chapter, but here are some tango-related films I could find:

Tango Dancing Styles

Tango Canyengue, Tango Liso, Tango Orillero
(before 1940s)

Tango Canyengue refers to a style of Tango danced until the 1920s. Reportedly, the long tight fashion in dresses of that era restricted the follower's movements. Consequently, the style involves short steps. The dancers tend to move with knees slightly bent, the partners slightly offset, and in a closed embrace. The style tends to be danced to a 2/4 time signature. As the Cayengue style was mostly not danced in ballrooms, but in taverns and on the street, the typical soft feet movements with close contact to the ground were not possible, leading to a more "hopping" style.

Tango Liso developed in small and crowded dance halls, where there was only space to take a few paces before having to circle around each other, waiting for a space to open. The style is danced with an upright posture, usually with each dancer slightly offset to the right of their partner. If a close embrace is used, it is relaxed to allow the follower to perform turns. The dance involves just the simpler steps-- decorative moves such as boleos, ganchos, and sentadas are absent from the style.

Tango Orillero is thought to have developed away from the town centers, in the outskirts and suburbs where there was more freedom due to more available space on the dance floor. The style is danced in an upright position and uses various embellishments including rapid foot moves, kicks, and even some acrobatics, though this is a more recent development.

Salon and Milonguero Tango
(1940s till today)

Salon Tango developed in the less crowded up-market dance halls, allowing space for boleos, ganchos, and sentadas to be performed. The style is generally danced in an open embrace.

Tango Milonguero developed in the 1940s and 50s in closely packed dance halls and "confiterias", so it is danced in close embrace, chest-to chest, with the partners leaning - or appearing to lean - slightly towards each other to allow space for the feet to move. There are not many embellishments or firuletes or complicated figures for the lack of space. Although the rhythmic, close-embrace style of dancing has existed for decades, the term "Milonguero Style" only surfaced in the mid- '90s.

Nuevo and Fantasia/Show Tango
(1990s till today)

Tango Nuevo is a dancing and teaching style. Tango Nuevo as a teaching style emphasizes a structural analysis of the dance in which previously unexplored combinations of steps and new figures can be found. By taking tango down to the physics of the movements in a systematic way, dancers explore the complete set of possibilities of tango movements, defined by two bodies and four legs moving in walks or circles. In walks, their explorations pioneered what were once called "alterations" and are now called "changes of direction". In turns, they focus on being very aware of where the axis of the turn is (in the follower/in the leader/in between them). This tends to produce a flowing style, with the partners rotating around each other on a constantly shifting axis, or else incorporating novel changes of direction. Tango Nuevo is often misunderstood and mislabeled as "Show Tango" because a large percentage of today's stage dancers have adopted "tango nuevo" elements in their choreographies.

Show Tango, also called Fantasia, is a more theatrical and exaggerated form of Argentine tango developed to suit the stage. It includes many embellishments, acrobatics, and solo moves. Unlike other forms of tango, stage tango is not improvised and is rather choreographed and practiced to a predetermined piece of music.

A Brief History of Tango

Etymology: The word "tango" may have come from many African languages where it means "closed space," "reserved ground"--in Africa today it appears as a place name in Angola and Mali. It could also be a derivation from the Portuguese tangere: to touch--and therefore it could have reached the Western hemisphere through Portuguese slave ships with slave-trading connection in San Tome` (Gulf of Guinea). In this case the word was picked up by slaves from their captors. No matter what the origins are, Tango acquired the standard meaning of "place" where the African slaves got together for dancing throughout the Spanish American empire. Later in the 18th century, black dancers in general were given the name of Tango.

The music and the dance: Tango started as a fusion of African slave dance (candombe) and milonga (a bastardization of polka): the compadritos observed the African-Argentine steps and movements and blended them into their own traditional polka and mazurka. Approximately around 1850s, "milonga became a mockery of the dance the blacks hold in their own places."

Prior to the 1920s Tango music and dance was defined as The “Old Guard” style: the instrumentation was simpler, the tempo slightly faster and the social context firmly set in the old barrios where 'disreputable' men would dance with each other in the streets for practice while awaiting admission to the taverns. Tango moved out of the barrios and arrabales when the wealthy youth started "slumming" and taking part occasionally in the compadritos’ gathering. The dance started its progress towards the center of the city by becoming a grandiose form of entertainment in all brothels and also in the high class brothels close to the center of the city. It also became synonymous of moral corruption for the upper Argentine class.

The “New Guard” style: Between 1916 and 1920 with the closing of the bordellos Tango migrated to cafes, cabarets and dance halls. By 1918 a few key composers were writing original Tango lyrics, often as poetry rather than music. Picked up by a rising generation of new singers, the consciously melancholic tone of much of this new writing became a key component in what would become the 'New Guard' style, typified by Francisco Canaro, Julio DeCaro and, most especially, Carlos Gardel.

Each wave of immigrants contributed to the re-making of Tango dance, music, and lyrics. Italian immigrants, some of them key figures in political and upper class social scenes, took charge of the dance and cleaned it up. They embraced the dance by softening its rough edges and making it suitable to dance in their homes and social gatherings: Italians would dance Tango liso (smooth tango) with their wives and sweethearts in their very proper low, middle, and upper class settings. They introduced the use of the accordion and the mandolin. (The Tango liso evolved into ballroom Tango.) German Immigrants introduced the use of the most representative instrument of Tango, the Bandeon: a German-made squeezebox instrument--extremely difficult to play. Jewish immigrants introduced the use of the violin.

In the 1910s we see the first Tango recordings and orchestras: from the traditional number of three musicians to six; from one bandeon, one violin, one guitar to two bandeons, two violins, one piano and one flute (orchestra tipica). In 1913-14 Tango invaded Paris and London through the high, smart society: wealthy Argentinean lived in Europe and gave parties to which the local nobility was invited. Soon Tango became a craze all over Europe giving life to the phenomenon called the “Tangomania of the 1920s.” Tango was liberating for women (it allowed unprecedented freedom of movement) and seductive for men (it glamorized the image of the latin lover; Rodolfo Valentino introduced it to Hollywood later). Tango influenced fashion in clothing with Satin Tango (yellow/orange silk) and Jupes Culottes (pants for women); new fashion in perfume: Nirvana and Sakountala (sandalwood and patchouli); new fashion in French cuisine: la banane tango, le peche melba, and le gateau tango. Because of this newly acquired fame, upper class society embraced the dance back in Argentina, provided that it was "cleaned up" of its most transgressive steps.

The “Post-New Guard” style: While the war in Europe interrupted Tango appreciation during the first half of the 1940s, in Argentina a “post-new-guard” style was starting to gain ground, pioneered by Anabal Troilo, an extraordinary bandoneon player who increased the size of the classic Tango orchestra, and introduced a new level of aggressiveness that laid the foundations for the Nuevo Tango style of Piazzola. This new sub-style occurred roughly parallel with the emergence and duration of the Peron dictatorship, politicising the Tango. By 1955, when Peronism was collapsing, and American culture and Rock 'n' Roll was invading Latin America, Tango suffered; it was considered politically incorrect and definitely unhip. By 1960 the style was confined to the backwaters of Argentine culture. However, it was revived by artists like Piazzola who, angered by social and political events, became intensely patriotic and deeply committed to the rescuing of the 'National' music. Piazzola played often outside Argentina and developed an austere, pare-military approach that caused controversy around him still lasting today (he died in1992).

I am fully aware of the fact that the above is a very concise rendering of the origins and evolution of Tango and I apologise for the omission of many important names and facts. I wanted to offer a quick introduction to the dance and the music in order to encourage our readers to read further on their own.

Our next milonga will take place on Saturday, May 13th, 9:15pm, at Memorial in Ohio Union. I hope to see many people to dance and enjoy good conversations with. There will hopefully be a surprise guest, Julio, who dances "with much experience, virtuosity and grace", and a surprise idea.

We are planning to hold another milonga on May 27th at Memorial too.

4) A Book about the Art History of Argentine Tango

As the person who commented on Jon Devlin's class, historical & cultural knowledge of Argentine Tango could deepen your experience of dancing. There is a book called Tango: the Art History of Love by Robert F. Thompson which has been recently published. Maybe you know it already from the show on NPR (Afropop) the other day? If not, you can read the entire (I think...) interview with Thompson to sneak-peek at what it's about at Afropop's website: http://www.afropop.org/ (The link is under "INTERVIEWS" but you can do keyword search with "tango" or "Thompson.") I haven't read the book yet, but there seems to be plenty to learn from it.
